An OECD study has shown that worker productivity tends to be highest in the countries where it’s hardest to fire employees. Feeling insecure about your job, it seems, is a big demotivator. But big businesses are still in love with the idea that cutting the workforce is the way to profitability, and they are willing to give big money to ‘management consultants’ who tell them that everything will be better if they just lay off more people.
